23: Progressive Cartoons
Thursday Feb 20, 2020
Thursday Feb 20, 2020
Cartoons and animation have recently made a shift to more accurately reflect the world around us. Shows like Steven Universe and She Ra introduce and celebrate more complex examples of identity and gender. While this might be something less new for television shows directed for a more mature audience, the representation for a younger and more easily influenced demographic is quite progressive.
In this episode, we reflect on the cartoons of our youth in comparison to this new generation of more inclusive content.

Boy Things and Girl Things: Assigning Gender to the world we live in
It’s not uncommon for the Ladies of Comicazi to be approached by others in search of reading recommendations for their family, friends, or what have you. We’re always happy to talk about our favorites, but things can get a bit interesting when the request specifically asks for a "boy" thing or a "girl" thing.
In this podcast, The Ladies discuss how we assign gender to the things around us and how it influences both pop culture and our own views of the world.

15. Angel Moms - Living with Unattainable Expectations
Friday May 24, 2019
Friday May 24, 2019
In books, television, and movies, we are often shown an image of motherhood as superheroic or even saintly. In a world where both stay at home moms and working moms are judged by what they do or don’t do, moms everywhere live in a constant state of having to justify every decision they make. In pop culture, stay at home moms are held up to a angelic homemaker perfection standard, and the working mother is constantly struggling to maintain a work and home balance that tips more towards work - often having to make sacrifices to get what they want. Why is this still the primary narrative in 2019, and what are the ways we can shift it?
Trigger Warning - Discussions of child loss and troubles with conceiving.

In books, television, and movies, we are often shown an image of motherhood as superheroic or even saintly. Women who can’t or won’t have children, however, are routinely shown as somehow lacking or damaged, and particularly of seeing themselves this way. Why is this still the primary narrative in 2019, and what are the ways we can shift it?
